Summary
"The daughter of a famous vaudevillian dancer, Evie Grace Devlin was pushed onto the stage as a toddler. Pitched to audiences as the toe-dancing Pint-Sized Pavlova, Evie could never satisfy Mamie, her fame-obsessed stage mother. Evie hated the glare of the spotlight and what Mamie forced her to do to capture it. A scholarship to study nursing at a Catholic hospital in Galveston, Texas, is her only hope of escape. For three years, Evie works harder than anyone. But, just as she is about to be certified, secrets from her past are revealed and she is cast out. It's 1932, and Evie is just one more casualty wandering a nation struggling with massive unemployment, economic failure, and government ineptitude. With no choice but to return to her roots, Evie finds work--as an unregistered nurse--looking after a troupe of marathon dancers. Enduring endless physical punishment, the exhausted entertainers jitterbug and joke to keep up the spirits of both their hard-luck fans and the fat cats in the box seats. All while bootlegger financiers rake in the profit. Zave Cassidy, the Handsome Hoofer, is the show's star. As Evie cares for him, she finds herself thrust into the spotlight, promoted as Zave's nurse and dance partner. Winning over audiences with their fancy moves and implied romance, they make headlines. Offstage, Evie and Zave grow closer, sharing their dreams and planning a future together. But Galveston in the thirties is a place of dark glamour and dangerous plots where secrets can ignite and consume dreams, love, and, yes, even lives."--, Provided by publisher
