- Summary
- Five hundred years before Columbus set sail, Vikings arrive in America on landnam, or land-taking, in a desperate bid to find a new homeland where they can worship their gods in peace. They are led by Thorlak the Lawspeaker, a magic maker, and his apprentice Thyra, an enigmatic young woman said to be an accomplished practicioner of Odin magic. Chief Badisut, leader of Whale Rib Village, is brought the news that the Wobee have returned to the People of the Songtrail's lands. This knowledge fills him with anger and sorrow, for ten years ago these people came to his country and kidnapped children, among them Badisut's own son, Elrik. Badisut wonders if they come in peace to trade . . . or to rape and pillage. And so the stage is set for an epic confrontation between two peoples striving for the right to live in this land
