Summary

Private investigator V.I. Warshawski is busy--with her golden retriever, who is about to whelp a first litter; with her downstairs neighbor, the 77-year-old Mr. Contreras; and with trying to protect an elderly neighborhood woman being harassed by a group of yuppies hellbent on the gentrificationof Chicago's Racine Avenue. A yuppie lawyer and his wife manage to havethemselves appointed legal guardians of V.I.'s elderly, dog-loving neighbor and appear to be raiding her rather meager assets. This could very well be connected to the main case V.I. is pursuing, the disappearance and likely murder of Mr. Contreras's lifelong friend Mitch Kruger
