Summary

Orphaned and penniless in the early part of the Great Depression, Jacob Jankowski lands a job with the third-rate Benzini Brothers circus, lucky to have any job at all. Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, is there because she's fallen in love with the wrong man, a handsome circus boss with a wide mean streak. And Rosie the elephant is there because she's the great gray hope of the circus, the new act that will be its salvation. But Rosie doesn't have an act, and can't even follow instructions.
