Mummies, says Lauber, tell much about the diseases, diets, and life spans of ancient peoples. Before getting down to their messages, however, she looks at the mummies themselves. Taking off from particular mummies, "natural and manmade," that have been found in several parts of the world, she explains how the corpses are preserved (usually by quick drying) and how carbon 14 dating helps determine their age, then describes the different elaborate methods used by the ancient Scythians, the Jivaro head-hunters of South America, and the Egyptian embalmers. As for scientists' readings of mummies, X-rays reveal that the ancient Egyptians were plagued by parasites from the Nile and sand in their daily bread. Examination of Peru's mummies confirms that Indian diets and general health were far worse after the Spanish came. Finally, there is speculation about the "bog people" of Denmark and why they were all put to death before being deposited in the bogs. This approach to mummies-as-text gives Lauber's book a distinguishing slant (and a good title), though the cultural and environmental information her readers glean from all these specimens is secondary to the perennial appeal of the mummies themselves. Whatever its target, though, her wide-ranging text informs without sensationalism; and the black-and-white photos have intelligent variety and their fair share of grisly fascination.
