Summary
James K. Polk is considered one of the greatest American presidents. He won a war, doubled America's size, and empowered the executive branch--in just four years--against a contentious political backdrop. Yet until this prodigious biography by noted historian Walter R. Borneman, no complete account of Polk's life had ever been written. Polk made it plain he intended to serve a single term, a lame-duck stance many believed would weaken his authority. Instead, he used his four years in office wisely, outflanking his adversaries to establish his ambitious plans. He won tariff reductions and reestablished an independent treasury. Most notably, he greatly expanded American territory by bringing Texas into the union, outfoxing Britain to obtain most of Oregon, and Wrenching California and much of the Southwest from Mexico. At last, through Borneman's lucid narrative, Polk emerges as the last strong presidient before Lincoln and one of the most impressive men to ever hold the office, period
