Review
  • Grades 7-11 The second volume of Sandford and Cook’s Singular Menace series begins with the haunting image of Shay, her infamous red hair now shorn and dyed, striding through Home Depot with her dog and a pocket of blood-soaked money. Her crew still includes enigmatic artist Twist, computer whiz Cabe, and street-smart Cruz. Now they are joined by Shay’s brother Odin and Fenfang, a rescued victim of the Singular Corporation’s terrible human experimentation. Fronting as a biomedical research facility creating prosthetics, Singular’s true intent is to imbue high-level investors with immortality through invincible body parts. “Researchers” have drilled holes into Fenfang’s skull, implanting wires that transmit the thoughts of a powerful, aging senator. Using technological wizardry, intricate strategy, and sheer athleticism, the crew teases out dangerous secrets, getting ever closer to the core of Singular’s operation. Despite a sense of growing camaraderie and even a bit of romance among the characters, the emphasis is on their intelligence and courage as they outmaneuver the ultimate evil corporation. Any reader looking for an action-packed thriller should pick this up. -- Colson, Diane (Reviewed 09-01-2015) (Booklist, vol 112, number 1)
  • Gr 8 Up — Picking up right where Uncaged (2014) left off, Shay Remby and her allies have just rescued a mysterious girl, along with Shay's brother Odin, from the Singular Corporation's secret lab. The shifty corporation was experimenting on the teens, trying to download memories from other people into their brains. A fast-moving techno thriller for fans of action-oriented sci-fi. --Staff (Reviewed August 1, 2015) (School Library Journal, vol 61, issue 8, p114)
  • After rescuing her autistic brother, Odin, Shay and her troupe of teen terrorists continue their campaign to take down the evil corporation Singular (Uncaged, 2014). The flash drives Odin stole from a lab and endured torture to protect have put Singular, a secretive research firm, on the defensive and on his trail. Singular's toughs are also hunting the siblings in hopes of recovering X, a technologically augmented dog, and Fenfang, a Chinese teenager and human guinea pig in an experiment to implant the personality of another person in her mind. With the help of guerilla artist Twist, a couple of street kids he's helped, and a marijuana-growing trust-fund brat, Shay tries to expose Singular's illegal experiments…but when Singular's corporate supporters turn out to be heads of state with access to the CIA, FBI, and NSA, is that still possible, even with help from the inside? Sandford and Cook churn out another often sluggish thriller. With the opening volume's preliminaries out of the way, there is a bit more action here than in Book 1, but it comes in fits and starts. Dull villains, some clunky dialogue, and far too much planning before each action sequence do nothing to keep the pages turning; with the main characters in peril at the close, it's ultimately unsatisfying. Fans of the first may enjoy; others need not apply. (Thriller. 15-18)(Kirkus Reviews, September 1, 2015)
