Summary
In this ground-breaking biography, Jung Chang vividly describes how Empress Dowager Cixi fought against monumental obstacles to change China. Under her the ancient country attained virtually all the attributes of a modern state: industries, railways, electricity, telegraph, and an army and navy with up-to-date weaponry
Summary
Chosen as one of the Emperor's concubines at age 16, Empress Dowager Cixi (1835–1908) ruled China for decades and brought a medieval empire into the modern age. Upon the Emperor's death in 1861, their 5-year-old son ascended to the throne; Cixi overthrew the appointed regents, to become the true power behind the throne (a silk screen literally separated her from her all-male advisors during briefings). She abolished tortuous punishements, inaugurated women’s liberation, moved China toward more egalitarian means of rulership. - Description by Katherine Bradley Johnson
